Browse Subjects by A-Z Index

The A-Z index in Browse Subjects functions as a thesaurus to optimize your ability to search eHRAF by automatically identifying relevant search terms based on the keywords that you enter. It helps to match your chosen search terms with those that were used to index eHRAF, thereby guiding you to the best terms for searching. In addition to matching your keywords with the terms used by HRAF’s indexers, it will also direct you to any documents in eHRAF which contain a substantial amount of information about that subject.

Begin by entering the eHRAF interface and find the navigation bar at the top of the page.

  1. Click on the tab.
  2. Click on the button.
  3. Type your keyword into the Filter Index box. The list will filter possible matches as you type. Alternatively, use the A-Z buttons along the top to jump forward or backward by letter.

  4. The results will help you to match your keywords with the OCM categories in eHRAF. You can then use these codes when searching to increase your search accuracy and efficiency.
In the results list, where you see the word “USE” followed by a subject description, the latter is the subject used by our indexers. We call these "Use Fors". Note that these terms can be more general or more specific than the terms you entered. You may choose to use the OCM subject in an Advanced Search with or without a keyword to control for this.
  5. Beneath the subject results that interest you or seem closest to your terms, explore the Subject Profile (Subject Description and Related Documents) links to learn more.
