Research aims and objectives (e.g., complete ethnographic description, study of a particular institution or culture complex, testing of a theoretical hypothesis); general theoretical approach (e.g., historical, functional, psychological); formulation of research program; reasons for choice of particular field site or archaeological site; theoretical results; research strategy employed (e.g., ethnographic, survey, excavation, museographic, ethnoarcheological investigation), etc.
This term replaced "Theoretical Orientation" in 1997. The scope note was updated in 2000.
