Culture Description

The Mixe-Zoquean speaking Popoluca of southern Veracruz traditionally practiced a mixed agriculture emphasizing maize, supplemented by hunting, fishing and gathering. By the end of the twentieth century cattle ranching dominated, along with forage and commercial crops. Sociopolitical life centers on villages and municipalities with elected official. The Popoluca practice of Catholicism is infused pre-Columbian elements, many related to traditional subsistence, and religious ceremonies, celebrations of major life events, and magical practices influence the distribution and consumption and of goods.
