This article contains a discussion of the Trobriand method
of ordering time and its relationship to gardening. The inefficiency of Trobriand
time-reckoning for horticultural purposes is clearly brought out. Information on the
astronomical knowledge of the islanders is also included. Austen was a resident magistrate
and also held a degree in anthropology.
