This is a collection of Tlingit folk tales that were either
remembered by Ackerman or provided by other contributors. The tales include coming of age
stories, stories about the properties and abilities of animals and about supernatural
beings (the KOOSHD'AA K'AA) who take on human form mainly for evil purposes. Ackerman first
discusses her own background in growing up as a Tlingit child. Some of the stories, which
are oriented toward children, are also autobiographical and were used to inculcate certain
values and behaviors in the young in Tlingit society. Others are taken from an oral
historical tradition. It is apparent that this book is a primer which is part of a series
intended to keep alive the culture of Native American Alaskan peoples.
