Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document In this article Abdulhadi discusses the rise of an autonomous Palestinian women's movement in the Occupied Territories in the 1990s. She asks why a surging women's movement occurred at a time when the nationalist movement was in ebb. She bases her work on 74 open-ended, in-depth interviews with 68 Palestinian women activists. Women activists have been involved in various social and political issues, forming various committees and voluntary associations since the 1920s, according to the author, exhibiting a richness of voices and actions. This organizational substrate was the basis for the later movement which was partly a reaction to the imposition of the HIJAB on Palestinian women.
