Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a social anthropological study of the community
life and kinship system of small farmers in County Clare. Detail is given for the farm
economy, marriage and family patterns, kinship structure, property and inheritance
system, housing and settlement patterns, social stratification, labor exchange and
employment, interpersonal relationships, public opinion and attitudes, and the nature of
social and economic ties with areas outside of the farm community. It is demonstrated
that the persistent decline in rural population is not due to poverty but to traditional
social patterns centering on the family.
