The author states, in this doctoral dissertation, that his
study of Wolof polygyny seeks to give attention to the entire range of cultural phenomena,
focusing attention on the individual acting in various ways in concrete situations and
trying to discover the attitudes, motivations, and sanctions that underlie and help to
explain such behavior. The discussion begins with the principal patterns of Wolof culture
and then goes to specific topics such as marriage, social stratification, status of women,
family and kinship structure, household economy, property ownership, problems of individual
adjustment in a polygynous household, and the impact of European culture. In 1959, the
author was assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin.
